Chivas Clem: Shirttail Kin:
A native of Paris, Texas, Chivas Clem returned to his hometown more than a decade ago after an illustrious early career in New York. After completing the Whitney Independent Study Program and being an essential part of august institutions such as Artforum and American Fine Arts, Clem made the radical move back to Texas. While his earlier art practice explored the psycho-sexual underbelly of American pop culture, Clem turned his attention to his native landscape, its forgotten population, and the mythos of the Southwest. His voracious camera began documenting a male subculture he encountered in Paris. Learn more here.

Daniela Andriana de Rodrigues Flint received her BA in Painting from the Maine College of Art. Her practice challenges the viewer to compare the emotional, fiscal, decorative, and utilitarian value of an object.

Join Mari Rodríguez Binnie in person at Dallas Contemporary as she speaks about her new book, The São Paulo Neo-Avant-Garde: Radical Art and Mass Print Media in Cold War Brazil.
Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, during Brazil's military dictatorship, artists shifted their practices to critique the government and its sanitized images of Brazil, its use of torture, and its targeted persecutions. Mari Rodríguez Binnie's The São Paulo Neo-Avant-Garde examines these artworks and their engagement with politics and mainstream art institutions and practices.
As Binnie skillfully shows, artists appropriated processes like photocopy, offset lithography, and thermal and heliographic printing, making newly available technologies of mass production foundational to their work of resistance against both the dictatorship and the established art world. Often working collaboratively, these artists established alternative networks of exchange locally and internationally to circulate their work. As democracy was reestablished in Brazil, and in the decades that followed, their works largely fell out of sight. Here, in the first English-language book to focus entirely on conceptual practices in São Paulo in the 1970s and 1980s, Binnie unearths a scene critical to the development of contemporary Brazilian Art.

Inaugural North Texas Graduate Program Exhibition, 'Open University'
Dallas Contemporary is pleased to present Open University, the inaugural DC NTX Graduate Student Program exhibition opening on 24 January 2025, curated by Matthew Higgs, Director and Chief Curator of White Columns in New York. The annual initiative, launched in August 2024, invites North Texas MFA students in their final year of graduate work to exhibit at Dallas Contemporary, after being selected by a visiting national curator. The program is aimed at advancing the early careers of emerging artists schooled in the region and fosters healthy interactions and connections between students and renowned curators. The DC NTX Graduate Student Program is funded with foundational five-year support from Ann and John McReynolds.
Across students from Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, Texas Woman’s University, University of North Texas, The University of Texas at Arlington, and The University of Texas at Dallas, the inaugural DC NTX Graduate Student Program cohort includes: Courtney Broussard, Christina Childress, Lisa Clayton, Taylor Cleveland, Pablo Cruz, Veronica Ibargüengoitia Tena, Austin Lewis, Katherine Pinkham, Sarah Rainey, Elijah Ruhala, Narong Tintamusik, Sharmeen Uqaili, and Vajihe Zamaniderkani.

'EJ Hill and Martin Gonzales: Velvet Faith'
Velvet Faith, curated by Emily Edwards, features artists EJ Hill and Martin Gonzales and will include works created on-site during their month-long residency, alongside new sculptures and paintings.
Velvet Faith explores the dynamics of community, emphasizing trust and faith as foundational elements. The show serves as a trust fall for both artists, who come together onsite to create new work in a collaborative process, embracing the unknown of what will emerge. In this exploration, they investigate how creating large-scale works can help assert and reclaim space typically denied to certain groups and individuals, highlighting the crucial importance of feeling worthy in a world that often refuses to see them fully. Their practices reflect a deep need to engage with the world. Despite their differing backgrounds—Hill’s rooted in durational performance and Gonzales in sculpture—their practices converge in a shared desire to honor improvisation as a tool within survival and liberation frameworks.
This exhibition invites viewers to come home—whatever or wherever that might be. Together, Hill and Gonzales celebrate the hard work of being soft, the power of living one’s truth, and the journey towards self-determination. Through Velvet Faith, Hill and Gonzales embrace the freedom of returning to themselves, embody an example of expansiveness, and ask viewers to take part in witnessing the value of their shared experience.

DABF 25'
The Dallas Art Book Fair celebrates its 5th anniversary this spring, returning to Dallas Contemporary for its fourth iteration as the museum’s highest-attended program. Held over the course of two days, the annual book fair brings together regional, national, and international artists, presses, publishers, galleries, and bookstores in the museum’s generous space. In addition to offering a stimulating assortment of printed works from local, national, and international presses, the fair also boasts an enriched programming schedule, with engaging conversations + readings with authors and artists; a makerspace for zine and printmaking workshops; activities for kids and families; live music; and culinary offerings from around the city.

Art Sundae
In conjunction with Velvet Faith, Hill and Gonzales will collaborate with Art Production Fund (APF) to present a special edition of their public program Art Sundae on March 30, 2025, from 1-4 PM. Presented by APF, Art Sundae is a free, hands-on art-making experience for children, led by contemporary artists. Launched in 2017 Art Sundae aims to make art accessible and highlight the positive impact of art across all communities. The event is designed to foster creative expression and provide an engaging, inclusive experience for all. This will be the first iteration of Art Sundae in Dallas, made possible through the generous support of Leatherology.
In this unique program, Hill and Gonzales will guide participants through an art-making process inspired by their own creative practices. The resulting artworks will be showcased in a public art installation, which will remain on view at the museum for two weeks.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Dallas Contemporary and bring Art Sundae to Dallas for the first time ever,” said Casey Fremont, APF Executive Director. “Art Sundae is all about building confidence in children through the joy of art-making. We can’t wait to see how Hill and Gonzales will inspire participants.”

'You Stretched Diagonally Across It: Contemporary Tapestry'
Opening April 4, You Stretched Diagonally Across It: Contemporary Tapestry is a celebration of tapestry and its practitioners in the 21st century, offering a consideration of the strategies by which contemporary artists interrogate tactility and image in the age-old medium of tapestry in a current context. Featuring works by twenty-seven artists and designers, and organized by guest curator Su Wu, the exhibition depends, like the works that compel it, on an engagement with interstices specific to tapestry – between art and craft, the medium and the matter, and devotion and its technological mediation. Across monumental works of great detail, the exhibition expands our experiences of narrative and mythology in weaving, complicates traditional ethnographic associations of textile, and argues for the enduring possibility of image and memory as a physically substantive thing.
Featuring works by Caroline Achaintre, Hellen Ascoli, Yto Barrada, Diedrick Brackens, Melissa Cody, Jovencio de la Paz, Josh Faught, Christina Forrer, Yann Gerstberger, Marie Hazard, Ane Henriksen, Kira Dominguez Hultgren, Sanam Khatabi, Tomasz Kowalski, Candice Lin, Goshka Macuga, Christy Matson, Mai-Thu Perret, Analia Saban, Kiki Smith, Mika Tajima, Clarissa Tossin, Consuelo Jiménez Underwood, and Miranda Fengyuan Zhang.
To accompany the exhibition, Los Angeles-based vintage textile library and shop Kneeland Co. will take over and activate the Dallas Contemporary store, featuring specially designed ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and collectibles, for sale exclusively in the shop. All pieces are specially designed for and inspired by You Stretched Diagonally Across It, and will even include works by artists featured in the exhibition.

Ryan Semegran (b. 2000 Austin, TX) is a multidisciplinary performance artist and sculptor based in Dallas, Texas. Semegran’s work focuses on themes of identity, religious guilt, and community through immersive installation-based performances. They are very interested in the idea of the body as a medium and have performed for spaces such as The Arts Fort Worth, Dallas Contemporary, The Other Art Fair, and Satellite Art Show NYC.

Join Ed Burns and Deep Vellum Books in person at Dallas Contemporary as he speaks about his debut novel, A Kid from Marlboro Road.
An Irish-American family comes to life through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy in this debut novel by actor-filmmaker Ed Burns. Immigrants and storytellers, lilting voices and Long Island moxie are all part of this colorful Irish-Catholic community in 1970s New York.
Our twelve-year-old narrator, an aspiring writer, is at a wake. He takes in the death of his beloved grandfather, Pop, a larger-than-life figure. The overflowing crowd — a sign of a life well lived — comprises sandhogs in their muddy work boots, Irish grandmothers in black dresses, cops in uniform, members of the family deep in mourning. He watches it all, not yet realizing how this Irish American world defines who he is and who he will become. His older brother Tommy has no patience for rules and domesticities, his father is emotionally elsewhere. This boy knows he’s the best thing his mother's got, though her sadness envelops them both.
In A Kid from Marlboro Road, past and present intermingle as family stories are told and retold. The narrative careens between the prior generation’s colorful sojourns in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen and the softer world of Gibson, the town on Long Island where they live now. There are scenes in the Rockaways, at Belmont racetrack, and in Montauk.

For first time visitors of the exhibitions, this is the recommended experience to get a holistic view of the works on display.

bombshell dance project will present the first installment of the dallas creation lab as part of the museum’s DC EMPTY programming. curated by bombshell’s emily bernet + taylor rodman the project will include a week of ideation at DC, ending in a one-night-only performance. step into the creative process of seven dallas artists during regular museum hours, + join us on saturday, 27 july to see the result of their collaborative work. stick around after the performance for a discussion with the artists followed by sips, bites + jams by jeff kinsey.
panel discussion: decolonizing art practices
on thursday, 18 july, join us for the panel discussion, decolonizing art practices organized and moderated by dallas contemporary’s visitor services team member, ryan semegran alongside their peers jesus daniel and adrian omar. this panel discussion is inspired by dallas contemporary’s current exhibition patrick martinez: histories and martinez’s efforts to decolonize his own practice and hear how young artists are attempting the same.
about the moderator:
ryan semegran (b. 2000 austin, tx) is a multidisciplinary performance artist and sculptor based in dallas, texas. they are currently working to receive their bfa in sculpture from the university of north texas in denton, tx. semegran’s work focuses on themes of identity, religious guilt, and community through immersive installation based performances. they are very interested in the idea of the body as a medium and has performed for spaces such as the arts fort worth, the other art fair dallas, and satellite art show nyc. semegran has been working as a visitor services member and docent for the dallas contemporary since 2021, they have worked 15+ shows in the last three years
about the panelist:
jesus daniel lopez, a multimedia artist from hidalgo, tx, now based in dallas, tx, has always admired photography and visual media. drawing inspiration from fashion magazines, internet content, and pop culture, he created a form of escapism through his art. as the director of photography for glaze zine in austin, tx, lopez has participated in multiple group exhibitions, including his first solo exhibition at 500x gallery in dallas and a recent show in new york with :iiddr. his work, primarily portraits, combines digital software with experimental printmaking techniques, exploring themes of identity, hispanic culture, queerness, and the human psyche.
adrian omar (b. 2001 wise county, tx) is an multi media artist primarily working in photography whose pieces blend portraiture, archiving practices, installation, with digital collage and manipulation. their interests include questions of materiality, memory, representation and the indexical properties of photography. omar received a bfa with a concentration in photography at the university of north texas in 2023. since then omar has stayed within the dallas-fort worth area, showing works at arts fort worth, latino cultural center of dallas, and 500x gallery.

for the next event, we will be screening the 1979 award-winning film ‘being there’ directed by hal ashby. ‘being there’ follows simple-minded chance (peter sellers), a gardener who has resided in the washington, d.c. townhouse of his wealthy employer for his entire life and been educated only by television, is forced to vacate his home when his boss dies. soon chance is ushered into high society, and his unaffected gardening wisdom makes him the talk of the town.
